Scholarship Opportunities for Rising Seniors

Patrick Bates '70 Endowed Scholarship

Established during the 2019 Grand Celebration Funds for Our Falcons Live Appeal in honor of long-standing Good Counsel teacher, Patrick Bates '70.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Demonstrated commitment to Good Counsel through involvement in athletics, service, or extracurricular activities

Joseph N. Brewer, III '84 Memorial Scholarship

Established by the family of Joseph Brewer '84. The Brewer family's dedication to the mission of Good Counsel is reflected by this scholarship that mirrors the life and experiences of Joseph.

Criteria:

  • Male
  • Rising senior
  • Commitment to Good Counsel
  • Demonstrated financial need

Richard Burns Endowed Scholarship

Established during the 2019 Grand Celebration Funds for Our Falcons Live Appeal in honor of long-standing Good Counsel teacher, Richard Burns.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Demonstrated commitment to Good Counsel through involvement in athletics, service, or extracurricular activities

Richard M. Burns Social Studies Scholarship

Established by Tim Welsh '84 in honor of his former teacher, Richard Burns.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Have taken at least 4 social studies course by graduation
  • Earned superior grades in social studies coursework
  • Considering social studies major in college
  • Demonstrated financial need

Joseph Reed Canavin '63 Memorial Scholarship

Established by Denny '66 and Mary Roderick and Alice and Lazarus Nemitsas to honor Joseph Reed Canavin '63.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Superior achievement and innovation in STEM curriculum
  • Active participation in extracurricular activities to include debate, newspaper, sports, and/or drama

Joseph M. Cardaci, Jr. '84 Memorial Scholarship

Established by the family of Joseph M. Cardaci, Jr. '84. The scholarships are designed to foster the spirit of caring and excellence that Joe exhibited during his years at Good Counsel.

Steve Dean '67 Memorial Scholarship

The Steve Dean Golf Classic, our annual golf tournament, provides funding for this scholarship.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Shows a love of Good Counsel through involvement in academic, social, and athletic programs
  • Demonstrated financial need


Rafael J. Dominguez ’84 Memorial Scholarship

Established by Kathy Dominguez and Kenneth Bartee with individual gifts to honor the memory of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School alumnus, Rafael Jesus Dominguez ’84.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Demonstrates passion for Good Counsel
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Latino/Latina (not required)

Dennis Essig Endowed Scholarship

Established during the 2019 Grand Celebration Funds for Our Falcons Live Appeal in honor of long-standing Good Counsel teacher, Dennis Essig.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Demonstrated commitment to Good Counsel through involvement in athletics, service, or extracurricular activities

Caitlyn (Katie) O'Bannon Fitzgerald '00 Memorial Scholarship

Established by family and friends, in loving memory of Katie Fitzgerald '00.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Involved in numerous extracurricular activities
  • Demonstrated financial need

Frank L. (Jim) Hewitt, III Memorial Scholarship

Established by Judy Hewitt in memory of her husband, Frank.

Criteria:

  • Female
  • Rising senior or junior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Team player with evidence of a humble spirit
  • Proven talent/accomplishment in basketball at Good Counsel
  • Demonstrated financial need

Daniel J. McGivern Memorial Scholarship

Established by Michael J. McGivern '68, in memory of Daniel J. McGivern.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Current member of Good Counsel Swim Team
  • Shows determination to succeed in all school activities
  • Demonstrated financial need (not required)

Arthur Raimo Scholarship

Established to honor the legacy of long-time President and former faculty member, Arthur Raimo.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • A student who has performed significant and meaningful community service over the course of three years at Good Counsel as determined by Campus Ministry
  • Special consideration is given to volunteers for Camp Good Counsel
  • Top 20% of his/her class
  • Demonstrates good character as certified by teachers, counselors, coaches, club moderators, or others

Michael Anthony Rosick '67 Memorial Scholarship

Established by Richard Roderick '66 and Patricia Rosick Roderick in memory of their friend and brother.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Demonstrated academic excellence
  • Compassionate for other students
  • Shows commitment to the Good Counsel community
  • Spirit in athletics, especially intramural sports
  • Participates in extracurricular activities

Richard Seel Endowed Scholarship

  • Demonstrated financial need

Dr. Richard Slocum Music Scholarship

Established by Tim Welsh ’84 in honor of his former teacher, Dr. Richard Slocum.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Consistently demonstrates the ideals of good musicianship and applies them to their own development as well as encouraging and supporting them in other students in the music program

Stan Spottswood Servant Leader Scholarship

Established by the Ramsammy/Eversley family in honor of Nia Ramsammy's choir teacher, Stan Spottswood, and in loving memory of her father, Arnold Ramsammy.

Criteria:

  • Rising female senior
  • The recipient must be a servant leader and exemplify the ideals Mr. Spottswood stresses including: good character, musical talent, commitment, and excellence
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrated financial need

The Branagan Music Scholarship

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Edward Branagan.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Excellence in music
  • Contributed the most to the band during previous two or three years at Good Counsel

The Knights of Columbus Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Rising senior
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Demonstrated commitment to Good Counsel through involvement in athletics, service, or extracurricular activities

Scholarship Opportunities for Rising Juniors

Camp Good Counsel Award (in memory of Beth Polletto '03)

The Camp Good Counsel Beth Polletto Award is given annually to a Good Counsel student who has served as a counselor for Camp Good Counsel and who embodies the spirit of the camp.

Thomas Murphy Memorial Scholarship Fund

Established in memory of Thomas Murphy.

Criteria:

  • Rising junior
  • Involved in at least one extracurricular activity
  • Good academic standing
  • Demonstrated financial need

Elizabeth (Beth) Polletto '03 Memorial Music Scholarship

Established by Mr. and Mrs. John Polletto in memory of their daughter, Beth.

Criteria:

  • Rising junior
  • Band student
  • A student who has shown most improvement on their instrument
  • A student who has given the most of themselves to the Good Counsel band
  • Demonstrated financial need


Application Information:

  • The application is due January 10, 2020 by 11:59 p.m., at which time the application site will close and late submissions will not be accepted.
  • The application is extensive. We suggest that students start working on it as soon as possible as there are several essays and other important information they must gather.
  • Please note: the selection process is blind. Student information is anonymized before the selection committee reviews applications. Therefore, please complete the application as thoroughly as possible.
  • Recipients will be notified in March. Scholarship awards are applied to the 2020-2021 tuition.
  • All scholarship recipients are required to write a thank you note(s) to the scholarship donor(s) (recipients will be contacted about this in March) and attend Good Counsel's annual Celebration of Scholarships on April 15, 2020 or risk the revocation of their scholarship.
