Dane Smith Bio Continued...

“I look at coaching as an opportunity to build lifelong relationships while utilizing the sport of lacrosse to help build young men who are prepared for life on and off the field,” Smith said. “Culture is everything at Good Counsel, and we expect our players to put the team first in everything they do. The brotherhood cultivated at Good Counsel lasts well beyond graduation, and while we will chase championships yearly, winning is only a part of the program's mission.”

Smith came to Good Counsel after seven seasons as head coach at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Md., where he transformed the program into a MAC contender. His 2019 team went 16-3, captured the MAC regular-season and tournament championships, and posted a school-record 12-game winning streak. That same season, Chase Noah earned first-team All-Met honors after a 110-point campaign, and Tony Diallo received the Bob Scott Award from USA Lacrosse for outstanding leadership and service.

Smith became head coach at St. Andrew’s in 2015 and quickly turned around a struggling program, delivering its first winning season in 14 years in just his second year. From 2017 to 19, the Lions won three straight MAC regular-season titles. He compiled a 75-43 record across seven seasons (no season in 2020).

“I’m eager for the opportunity to build an elite culture focused on relationships, character, and player development,” Smith said. “I’m grateful for my time at St. Andrew’s and all the community did for me. It prepared me well for the challenge of coaching at Good Counsel and competing in the WCAC.”

Before taking over at St. Andrew’s, Smith coached at his alma mater, Robert Morris University, where he served as an assistant from 2013–14 and helped the Colonials lead Division I in caused turnovers and rank eighth nationally in man-down defense. He began coaching in 2012 at Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, PA, helping the team reach the PIAA state semifinals and mentoring three All-Americans.

As a player, Smith was a three-year starting attackman at Hilliard Davidson High School in Columbus, Ohio. He walked on at Robert Morris, earned a scholarship, and became a two-time team captain. He helped RMU to a then-record 10 wins in 2010 and its first postseason appearance in 2011. He finished his college career as a defensive midfielder with 16 caused turnovers, 44 ground balls, and 46 consecutive game appearances. He was twice named to the NEC Academic Honor Roll.

In addition to his high school coaching, Smith leads Players First Lacrosse Camps & Clinics, coaches for Next Level Lacrosse, and serves as head of the U.S. Lacrosse Potomac Chapter.

“Dane exemplifies what we want in our coaches,”  Good Counsel Athletic Director Steve Howes said. “He is dedicated to building a program culture that produces enduring relationships, a hallmark of Good Counsel and the Xaverian tradition.”

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Robert Morris in 2011 and a master’s in instructional leadership in 2014. He now serves as Good Counsel’s director of admissions after working in admissions at St. Andrew’s High School.

Smith was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, by his parents, Dane and Judy. His wife, Andrea, a former volleyball player at Robert Morris, lives with him in Olney, MD., along with their three children.
