Katrina Wavering Bio Continued...
In 2024, they placed third at both meets and, for the first time in over a decade, fielded a scoring JV team—part of a roster that doubled in size under her leadership. The boys finished seventh and fifth at those respective meets.
“It was truly a joy to work with the boys and girls as a cross country assistant, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with them,” Wavering said at her hiring. “We’ve been on an upward trend the past few years. I’m going to do my best to see it continue.”
Wavering also serves as an assistant outdoor track coach, specializing in distance events, and holds a Level 1 coaching certification from the U.S. Track and Field Association. She finished the 2022 Boston Marathon.
As an assistant from 2019 to 2022, Wavering helped develop one of the top girls' distance squads. That stretch was highlighted by Leah Stephens, the No. 1-ranked cross country runner in Maryland and a two-time WCAC and Maryland Private Schools champion. Stephens set six school records, earned a scholarship to Florida State, and in 2022 finished seventh at the Champs Sports National Championships to earn second-team All-American honors.
Wavering came to Good Counsel after a decorated running career of her own. At Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, MD., she was team MVP in cross country and outdoor track and set school records in the 4x800m relay—indoors (9:21.70) and outdoors (9:26.74). Her team competed at the Millrose Games, New Balance Nationals, and the Penn Relays. She graduated in 2015.
She went on to the University of Maryland, competing for four years with the Terrapins’ club cross country and outdoor track teams, including appearances at multiple NIRCA national and regional meets. She also served as a writing tutor, career center assistant, communications intern, and residence supervisor for international students studying in Ireland.
“Cross country is a team sport — cultivating a competitive, healthy, and uplifting team culture is my highest priority,” Wavering said.
Wavering graduated from Maryland in 2019 with a double major in English language and literature and secondary English education. She now teaches English literature at Good Counsel.
Born in Silver Spring and raised in Crofton, MD., Wavering lives in Silver Spring with her husband, Jack, a 2016 Good Counsel graduate who won two WCAC cross country titles and later competed at Maryland and Virginia Tech.
