Explore Our Scholarships

Good Counsel offers a number of four-year, renewable scholarships for incoming Good Counsel students. The application deadline is December 5, 2025* and recipients will be notified by February 27, 2026. The first award installment will be applied to recipients' 2026-2027 school year tuition.

 

Academic Excellence Scholarships

 

Presidential Scholarships: $28,000

$7,000/year for four consecutive years

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to our highest achieving students who score in the top percentile on the HSPT, display outstanding academic performance and commitment to extracurricular involvement.

Students need not apply; Good Counsel awards this scholarship based on application components.

 

St. Francis Xavier Scholarships

$10,000 - $20,000/year for four consecutive years

In response to the Archdiocese of Washington’s desire to expand educational opportunities to the Latino community, Good Counsel created the St. Francis Xavier Scholarship initiative. St. Francis Xavier Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding incoming freshmen of Latino heritage with financial need as determined by FACTS.

The Xaverian Legacy and Endowment Scholarship (X-BLES)

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established by the class of 1962 during their 50th year reunion, the XBLES Scholarship honors the memory of the Xaverian Brothers by providing financial assistance to a student with financial need as determined by FACTS.

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming, academically exceptional freshman who embodies the characteristics of the Xaverian charism: humility, simplicity, compassion, zeal, and trust.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.




 

Emerging Leaders Scholarships

 

Xaverian Leadership Scholarships: $12,000 - $16,000

$3,000 - $4,000/year for four consecutive years

Xaverian Leadership Scholarships are awarded to high-achieving students who demonstrate leadership through extracurricular activities and commitment to serving others.

Students need not apply; Good Counsel awards this scholarship based on application components.




 

Fine Arts Scholarships

 

Fine Arts Scholarships: $16,000

$4,000/year for four consecutive years

A total of six fine arts scholarships in each category will be awarded to students who demonstrate notable achievement in choral, dance, instrumental, theater and visual arts. To apply for a fine arts scholarship, please check the appropriate box on your general admissions application to view digital audition information. Submissions for dance, theater, choral, and instrumental music are due December 5, 2025.

Visual Arts applicants will indicate interest for the visual art scholarship on the online application. Digital portfolio submissions are due December 5, 2025. Interviews will take place in January 2026.

 
 
Choral Scholarship
 
Students who audition for choir scholarships will be asked to complete the vocal audition at home and submit it electronically by December 5, 2025. The audition will include a vocal exercise directed by Mr. Spottswood and a vocal solo of the student’s choice.
 
Digital auditions will be submitted in the application portal and are due by December 5, 2025. Following submission, students will be contacted to sign up for a January in-person interview.

Visual Arts Scholarship
 
Visual arts applicants will be required to submit eight images of work that they have created in the last three years. The work should be in a variety of media (graphite, acrylic, watercolor, etc.). Please limit photography to no more than two images. Digital portfolios will be submitted in the application portal and are due by December 5, 2025. Following submission, students will be contacted to sign up for a January in-person interview.



 

Donor-Funded Scholarships

 

Alumni & Friends Legacy Scholarship

$2,000/year for four consecutive years

Established through generous gifts made in honor or memory of alumni and friends of GC. The Alumni & Friends Legacy Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman legacy student (defined as the child or grandchild of a Good Counsel alum). Preference will be given to a student with financial need as determined by FACTS.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.

 

Thomas P. and Marcella A. Murphy Endowed Scholarship

$2,500/year for four consecutive years

Established by the family of the late Tom and Marcella Murphy, the Thomas P. and Marcella A. Murphy Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman student with financial need as determined by FACTS.

Preference is given to a student accepted in the Ryken Studies Program or a student who graduates from St. Andrews Apostle in Silver Spring, MD or St. Elizabeth’s in Rockville, MD.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.

 

Cashen Bohlander ’18 Memorial Scholarship

$5,000/year for four consecutive years

Given in memory of Cashen Bohlander, this need-based scholarship is awarded to a student accepted into the Ryken Studies Program who possesses qualities similar to those Cashen possessed, including her commitment to hard work, compassion for others and perseverance. Preference is given to female graduates of St. Peter’s School in Olney, MD.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.

 

Rick Miller STEM Scholarship

$6,500/year for four consecutive years

Established to provide scholarships for incoming freshmen who show a passion and aptitude for continuing study in a STEM-related field.

This scholarship is awarded to an under-represented minority accepted into the STEM Program and demonstrates financial need as determined by FACTS. 

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.

 

James T. McKenna Memorial Scholarship

$5,000/year for four consecutive years

Established by Timothy McKenna '88 in memory of James T. McKenna. The James T. McKenna Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman student-athlete with financial need as determined by FACTS.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.

 

The Terry ’80 and Elizabeth Martin Endowed Scholarship

$5,000/year for four consecutive years

Established by Terry '80 and Elizabeth Martin, this scholarship is awarded to a male incoming freshman, who participates in athletics, and demonstrates financial need as determined by FACTS. 

It is renewable for students who maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, continues to participate in Good Counsel athletics, demonstrates passion for the school and community through hard work and personal commitment, and maintains satisfactory academic, attendance, and disciplinary standing.

To be considered for this scholarship, students must apply by December 5, 2025.




 

Speech and Debate Scholarships

 

Speech and Debate Scholarships: $9,000 - $16,000

$2,250 - $4,000/year for four consecutive years

Speech and Debate Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen who place first through sixth in the Speech and Debate competition held each year in February.

Select-Year Scholarships

 

Dr. Paul Barker Endowment for Student Talent (BEST) Scholarships

$2,500/year for four consecutive years

The Dr. Paul Barker Endowment for Student Talent (BEST) Scholarship was established by the Peace through Law Foundation in honor of Thomas Fortune Fay, who served as a member of Good Counsel’s Board of Directors from 2017-2020, and in recognition of the June 2023 retirement of Dr. Paul Barker as President of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. These scholarships are awarded to high-achieving students who have demonstrated leadership through extracurricular activities and a commitment to serving others.

These scholarships are awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2029-2030 school year.

 

Bill Jones STEM Scholarship

$2,000/year for four consecutive years

Established by friends and former STEM students, The Bill Jones STEM Scholarship honors the legacy of STEM Director, Bill Jones. This scholarship is awarded to an underrepresented minority accepted into the STEM Program who demonstrates financial need, as determined by FACTS.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2027-2028 school year.

 

The Colbert Family STEM Scholarship

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established by Theodore "Ted" and Trista Colbert, The Colbert Family STEM Scholarship aims to increase diversity in Good Counsel's STEM program. This scholarship is awarded to an underrepresented minority accepted into the STEM Program and financial need as determined by FACTS.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2027-2028 school year.

 

Frank L. Hewitt, III Memorial Scholarship

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established by Mrs. Judy Hewitt in memory of her beloved husband, Jim, this scholarship provides financial assistance to a female student who is a “team player” and demonstrates a spirit of humility in all she does.

The Frank L. Hewitt, III Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman female student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 who has demonstrated talent, accomplishment or leadership in the choral arts, basketball or soccer. Preference is given to students with financial need as determined by FACTS.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2027-2028 school year.

 

The Gregory-Bowman Endowed Scholarship

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established through the generosity of Ms. Consuelo Kendall ’99, The Gregory-Bowman Endowed Scholarship is named for Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the first African-American Cardinal, and Sister Thea Bowman, who is currently on the path to Sainthood and has spoken prominently about African-American Catholic life/faith. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a Black student with financial need as determined by FACTS.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2029-2030 school year.

 

The Madison Jane Smith “Never Settle” Scholarship

$5,000/year for four consecutive years

Established in memory of Madison Smith, this merit scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who embodies the spirit of Madison, who never settled. Additionally, ideal applicants are team players with a humble and generous spirit who has overcome adversity. Preference is given to female students, especially those with demonstrated athletic talent in swimming or golf.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2029-2030 school year.

 

The Schulien Family Endowed Scholarship

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established by Anthony ’83 and Kathleen Schulien, this scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman with demonstrated financial need. Ideal candidates will have As and Bs from a Maryland middle or K-8 school, with preference given to students from St. Catherine’s in Wheaton, MD. Preference is given to a student with an interest in lacrosse.

This scholarship is awarded every four years. The next application and selection cycle will take place during the 2029-2030 school year.

 

The Stafford Fitzgerald Nibley ’14 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

$1,250/year for four consecutive years

Established in memory of Stafford Fitzgerald Nibley ’14, this scholarship is awarded to a rising freshman who shares Stafford’s passion for musical theater and performance. If the criteria for involvement/interest in musical theater cannot be met in a given year, consideration may be given to a student who is a member of the choir, band, or related musical ensemble.
