Steve Howes '91 Hired as New Athletic Director
at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School
(OLNEY, MD) - Our Lady of Good Counsel High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Howes as Athletic Director (AD), effective August 1, 2019. Howes will take the reins from Pat Bates, '70 who is retiring after a 45-year career at Good Counsel.
Howes, a '91 graduate of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, has most recently served fifteen years as the men's head basketball coach at The Catholic University of America. Howes qualified for postseason play in thirteen out of fifteen seasons including five NCAA Tournament appearances, four league championships, and three regular conference championships. Additionally, Howes is a sports analyst for ABC-TV 24/7 News. Howes has previous experience at the school, having served as a Social Studies and Religion teacher from 1997 to 2004.
Howes, in accepting his new role, said "being named Our Lady of Good Counsel High School Athletic Director is a dream come true for me. I'm coming home – not just to my alma mater – but to the school where I began my career as a teacher and coach. Good Counsel gave me the foundation for the success I enjoyed as a head coach and I'm sincerely grateful for the opportunity to give back. I believe deeply in the Good Counsel mission of helping young men and women achieve success beyond their perceived limits, and athletics can play an important role in that journey. Our goal will be to make sure our student athletes are having a positive experience, fueled by Xaverian values, as we pursue excellence and championships in the Good Counsel tradition. I can't wait to get started and look forward to engaging with the entire Good Counsel community – our students, staff and my fellow alumni – as together we begin this new chapter in Falcons Athletics."
As Athletic Director, Howes will oversee fifty-four men's and women's WCAC Conference sports programs. He will work with an accomplished group of coaches and athletic training staff to maintain and enhance Good Counsel's commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
