Xaverian Service

Developing a commitment to service is central to the Good Counsel experience. Through Xaverian Service, students embrace our core values of simplicity, humility, compassion, zeal, and trust while engaging meaningfully with the poor and marginalized. Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching and the mission of the Xaverian Brothers, this work challenges students to step outside their comfort zones and respond to both immediate needs and systemic injustices.

It is also important to recognize the difference between voluntary labor (or simply working without payment) and true Xaverian service. This is a different approach from traditional community and civic service or SSL hours because it pulls us outside of ourselves, our comfort zone, and our preferences to meet those on the peripheries of our society either through charity (responding to immediate needs) and/or through justice (working to address long-term, systemic needs).

Xaverian Service Policies and Requirements

All students are required to complete 20 hours of Xaverian Service each academic year at approved nonprofit agencies that serve the poor or marginalized and align with Catholic teaching. By graduation, students will have completed 80 hours of service. Opportunities are provided through the Office of Campus Ministry and may include projects organized by classes, clubs, athletic teams, or other school groups.
