Health Services
The Good Counsel Health Services is dedicated to providing a quality school health program, and ensure the opportunity for each
student to reach an optimum state of physical, mental, and social well-being in
order to receive maximum benefit from his/her educational experience.
Our Lady of Good Counsel uses the Maryland Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene Immunization Certificate and the MCPS Health Inventory. All incoming freshmen and transfers are REQUIRED to have a completed Immunization
Certificate and Health Inventory on file before beginning classes. Any student who is on prescription
medication will be required to have a Maryland State School Medication Administration Authorization Form on
file.

Health Services
- Evaluation of sudden illness and injuries.
- First aid and emergency care including crisis intervention.
- Health Counseling regarding potential and identified health problems.
- Collaboration with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and
community professionals to identify health concerns that may interfere with
learning.
- Providing health education, wellness and health promotion activities,
and serving as resource for students, faculty, and parents.
- Developing health care plans for students with special needs and
chronic illness.
Health Room
Rules
- A student must have a pass to come to the Health Office.
- Students should not come to the Health Room between class periods. They must first check in with their teacher
to get a pass before coming to the Health Room.
Leaving School for Health Reasons
- The student must come to the Health Office and sign in on the Student
Health Log.
- The nurse will contact the student’s Parent/Guardian or Emergency
Contact named on the Health Office Signature Card.
- The student will be given a pass to leave school.
- Students who
leave campus without signing out will be placed on disciplinary probation and
face additional disciplinary action.
Medications
- Students are NEVER permitted to carry any medications other than
prescribed emergency medicines (Inhalers for asthma or Epi-pens for allergic
reactions).
- Medications MUST be delivered to the school
by the parent/guardian in the original prescription container with the
pharmacist’s label attached. A Maryland
State School Medication Administration Form must be on file for any
prescription medications.
- If the medicine is an over-the counter
medication, it must be delivered by the parent/guardian in the manufacturer’s original
packing. School personnel will not
administer any medications brought to school by the student.
- Any student who brings in medications or carries medication
with them will face disciplinary action.
- Over-the-counter medications are available in the Health
Office for students who have a completed the current Medication Consent form or
have a written consent on file. The
Medication Consent form is required each year for every student.
- Any change in dosage of a prescription must be authorized
in writing by the prescribing physician.
In addition, written authorization by the parent/guardian is required
for any change of dose of prescription or over-the-counter medication to be
administered.
- The first day’s dosage of any new medication must have been
given at home before it can be administered at school.
- The parent/guardian is responsible for collecting any
unused portion of medication within one week after expiration of the physician’s
order or/and the end of the school year.
Medication not claimed at that time will be destroyed.
Crutch/Physical Restriction Policy
- Students on crutches or students with any physical
restrictions will be assigned a buddy in the event of an
emergency. If a fire drill or actual emergency were to occur, the buddy will stay with the student and escort them out of the building where they will be met by a nurse on the sidewalk. These students will not be required to walk to the field with the rest of the student body.
Elevator Policy and Procedures
- When
a student is given a key to the elevator, they are given a lanyard with
a pass and the key attached. The pass has their name and date on it.
Students are allowed to have one student accompany them on the elevator to
help with books,backpacks, etc.
- Any student who is issued an elevator key will be instructed NOT to use the elevator in the event of a fire drill.
