Fine Arts
At Good Counsel High school, we believe in the capacity of art to raise the human spirit. Therefore we take the artistic education of our students seriously. Our dedicated staff offers numerous options for students interested in developing their talents:We offer three annual art shows, the Winter Art Show, the IB Art Show, and the Spring Art Show. We also make an effort to showcase Seniors' artworks during third quarter.
We also sponsor both in-house and outside art competitions. We offer Art Scholarships to incoming Freshmen. It is recommended that interested eighth grade applicants apply for them in January. Winners are selected through informal interviews and a review of the students' portfolios. Generally, 6 to 8 renewable scholarships are awarded in partial increments and the winners receive notice when their acceptance letters are mailed to them.
Art students also have the opportunity to submit artwork to the school's newspaper, Falcon News, and to the literary magazine, The Austringer.
In addition, Art Contests and Art Scholarship Competitions are offered each year by numerous organizations and art schools throughout the country. These are announced to students in class sessions and posted on an art teacher's web page for further reference.
Special Pre-College Summer Art Programs are also offered by a variety of art schools as well as college & university Art Departments. Brochures and fliers generally start arriving by mail in the Spring. These are made available to all art students during class sessions and their websites are also posted on an art teacher's web page for further referencing.
Each spring, The National Gallery of Art invites local high school Juniors, who are self-motivated & self-directed art students, to participate in their High School Art Seminar. This requires a commitment on the part of the student to 10 consecutive Saturday morning sessions at the Gallery. During that time, students learn more about 20th century art and produce a creative artform which represents a specific artist whose work they admire. They receive certificates at a concluding reception.
