The Good Counsel High School English Program develops an awareness of the importance of both language and literature in students' lives. The program emphasizes

  • oral and written communication skills
  • clarity and cogency in communication of ideas
  • critical thinking, reading, and listening skills
While the department stresses growth and improvement in skills, such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, it also provides students with experience of the ideas and cultural heritage in American, English, and World literatures.

Our English program nurtures intelligent, articulate, critically thinking Christians, aware of their cultural heritage and their responsibilities in it. Literary works are selected with a regard for Christian and humanistic values. Projects include public speaking and use of computer technology. Courses are offered on at least three levels each year to promote the academic growth and success of every student.
