Volunteering at GC

At Good Counsel, we rely heavily on our volunteers who offer significant contributions to the success of our students and the future of our school. We are incredibly grateful for your time, expertise, and talent; however, the Annotated Code of Maryland is very clear about the need for criminal background checks for school employees and volunteers. The purpose of the policy is to protect our children and our school.

Prudent practice dictates that we have background checks done for volunteers on our campus (or extensions of our campus) who will have substantial contact with children under the age of 18 years.

Substantial contact is defined as: Contact with children in which the duration and scope in both time and exposure to children is neither rare nor limited and may occur in a routine and/or ongoing basis. This includes all overnight activities with children. Examples of service to the school which will require persons to meet our volunteer screening requirements are chaperones on school trips, sales assistants in the school store, drivers to extra-curricular events, and so on.

If you believe that you are likely to volunteer at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in a context that would involve substantial contact with students, please begin the process by completing the Application for Volunteer Service and return the application to us at school as soon as possible.

Note: volunteers are permitted to serve while the reference check and criminal background screening are being performed. Continuance as a volunteer is contingent upon results of these screenings being acceptable to the School.

Policies and Procedures for Our Volunteers

    1. Application for Volunteer Service

The completed application will be placed in the personnel file of the volunteer applicant. Any person who declines to complete the application or provide references will not be allowed to serve as a volunteer.

    2. Reference Check

References will be contacted and asked a series of questions as determined by the School. Completed forms will be placed in the personnel file of the volunteer applicant. Any questionable references will be referred to the President of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. In such cases, written approval from the President will be required before the volunteer can serve.

    3. Criminal History Screening | Fingerprinting

We require volunteers who will have substantial contact with children to have fingerprinting done through a CJIS authorized provider that uses Livescan services. Below are several locations where these services are offered:

    • American Identity Solutions: 301-296-4499
    • Maryland Livescan Fingerprinting: 410-761-6700
    • American Fingerprinting Services: 301-941-1916

When completing your fingerprint information, please include:

    • Good Counsel’s authorization number: 9000026980
    • Attn: Patricia Perfetto
    • Complete both Maryland and FBI
    • Mail Reply to: Our Lady of Good Counsel HS | 17301 Old Vic Blvd | Olney, MD 20832

As it is for our employees, the cost of the criminal history screening (i.e. fingerprinting) will be the responsibility of the person being fingerprinted.

    VIRTUS Volunteer Screening

We understand that some potential volunteers have completed VIRTUS volunteer screening for the Archdiocese of Washington or STAND training for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. We do not accept these clearances in lieu of our own. We are an independent corporation and our legal and moral responsibilities to our students make it necessary for us to have control of the background checks for volunteer service performed for the School. Regardless of clearances gained elsewhere, all persons seeking to volunteer at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School must complete the screening process outlined above.

We take seriously the matter of your privacy. Our point of contact for the implementation of the background check procedures is Assistant to the Principal Mrs. Patti Perfetto. Mrs. Perfetto will ensure the confidentiality of all volunteer personnel files. These files will be kept in a secure area and, once filed, will not be removed from the designated area. Only school administrators and Mrs. Perfetto will have access to these files. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Patti Perfetto at 240-283-3302.

We understand the inconvenience of this policy. As one volunteer said, “All I want to do is help.”
