At Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, we are proud to have the Blessed Mother as our patroness. Around our beautiful campus and within our school building, we have many three-dimensional depictions of Our Lady, yet curiously, none of them depict Our Lady of Good Counsel. That changed this morning when the statue of Our Lady of Good Counsel designed by renowned artist Tim Schmalz was installed in Good Counsel's Grotto.

The design of the statue invites the viewer to interact with it. The scroll that cascades down the table contains multiple images and accompanying text drawn from Sacred Scripture and highlighting "good counsel" or wisdom. The statue and the grotto are not only meant to be a place of quiet reflection, but also a learning tool for GC faculty to use to engage with students. It is also meant to be an inspiration to the broader community of faith, giving the greater GC community a place to reflect.

Last Friday, Arts Masterworks students gathered for their first visiting guest artist. Valerie Craig, a 'plein air' painter from St. David's, PA came to do a two-hour workshop with our artists, musicians, and actors. Valerie started with a brief history of her training and career, sharing her knowledge about surviving as a professional artist in today's world. Students then participated in a painting activity where they experienced what it would be like to paint in nature. Valerie was an excellent teacher and the students each created a mini work of art. More information about Valerie and her work can be found at https://valeriecraig.com/.
